This week’s roundup is Valentine’s Day themed, and perfect for all you homebodies who choose Netflix movies over prix fixe menus.
Valentine’s Day movies are fun, but they’re a lot more fun with a themed dinner menu. I’ve created special menus for six popular romantic comedies and dramas for you to enjoy with friends and/or loved ones on the 14th.
6 Valentine’s Day Movie & Dinner Menus:
1) Sleepless in Seattle (1993):
Tom Hanks. Meg Ryan. Seattle. The Empire State Building. Adorableness.
For dinner, enjoy a Seattle Asian salmon, vegetable and grain bowl with affogato, a caffeinated Italian dessert that pairs ice cream with espresso for that “sleepless” effect.
Menu: Seattle Asian Salmon Bowl (Skinnytaste) and Affogato (Food Network)
2) When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) hate each other. Then forget each another. Then become best friends. Then they kind of love each other, but it’s complicated. Will it ever work out for them?
Menu: You’ll be setting up a deli sandwich platter (“I’ll have what she’s having” optional). And for dessert? A riff on coconut cake with chocolate sauce (on the side, of course): coconut macaroons and chocolate dipping sauce.
3) The Notebook (2004)
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in one of the greatest love stories ever told on film. I realize this is subjective. But this is my blog and I think it’s amazing. Bring tissues. There will be sobbing. Worth it. (Disclosure: I almost started crying re-watching the trailer just now).
Menu: Since the movie is set in the south, your southern-themed dinner will feature Shrimp and Grits and a strawberry shortcake for dessert.

4) It’s Complicated
I adore this hilarious, warm and honest movie starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. Director Nancy Meyers is known for designing “trophy kitchens” like the one you’ll covet in this movie, and there are tons of drool-worthy moments – watch for the chocolate croissants, croque monsieur and chocolate cake.
Menu: You’ll be cooking up Jake’s (Alec Baldwin’s) favorite dinner. Apparently Jane (Meryl Streep) makes a memorable roast chicken with sautéed string beans, mashed potatoes, and double fudge chocolate cake.
5) Crazy, Stupid Love (2011)
Ryan Gosling. Emma Stone. Steve Carrell. Julianne Moore. Charming. Funny. Adorable. Sentimental. Sweet. Love it.
Menu: Since the main character’s name is Cal Weaver, you’ll be having an updated Cal “Weaver Chicken” (that’s a brand of breaded chicken cutlets…): Almond Crusted Chicken with Strawberry Balsamic Sauce with a side of raw shredded brussels sprouts with lemon and oil. For dessert, dig into an individual serving of “Hannah Banana” Pudding (that’s Emma Stone’s character’s nickname).
6) The Decoy Bride
I asked my twitter friends for their favorite Valentine’s day movies, and @SweetheartsSts recommended The Decoy Bride. I haven’t seen it, but I thought the trailer was adorable and I liked her description of the film: “Super cheesy but full of Scottish accents, beautiful scenery, quotable lines, and best of all, David Tennant :)” Follow me on twitter (@sweetfoodie) so I can include your recommendations in a future blog post!
Menu: The movie is set in Scotland, so you’ll be having seared salmon with sugar snap pea fennel slaw and a traditional Scottish dessert called cranachan. Cranachan is a parfait made of toasted oats steeped in whiskey, fresh raspberries, raw honey, and heavy whipping cream. And more whiskey.
What’s your favorite movie to watch on or around Valentine’s day? Did it make my list?

Thanks for including my Cranachan recipe on your movie recommendations, Caroline! I am embarrassed to say that I have only seen the first two movies on this list! I now have 4 movies to look forward to watching; thanks so much for this post, I’ve heard so much about the Notebook, but still never made a point to sit down and watch it! Christina
