My latest blog post for Health Magazine just went live!
One of the hottest new food trends is really old…ancient in fact.
Ancient grains like KAMUT khorsan wheat, amaranth, millet, spelt and teff are popping up in staples like cereal and yogurt, and I’m happy to see it. They each have their own unique flavors, textures, and health benefits, and it’s definitely worth including a wider variety of grains in your diet. Why? Because it’s fun to try new foods. They taste darn good. And you get a dose of different vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to keep you healthy.
One of my new favorite products with ancient grains is the Pure Organics Ancient Grains bar, which I tried at the annual healthy food show, Expo West, last week.
Bob’s Red Mill sells a lot of ancient grains now, which they call “Grains of Discovery.”
You can also find them in Mary’s Gone Crackers (which are delicious by the way).
If you like baking, King Arthur Flour even sells a gluten-free ancient grains flour blend, with amaranth, millet, and sorghum flours mixed in!
Suzie’s Whole Ancient Grain Puffed Cakes are a great alternative to rice cakes and crackers, especially when topped with something high protein like nut or seed butters or hummus.
Once you start looking, you’ll see them everywhere.
The only product I’d tell you to skip is Ancient Grains Cheerios. While they sound healthier, they actually have 4 more grams of sugar per serving than regular Cheerios. That’s an extra teaspoon in each 1 cup serving.

I’d very much like to hear what you have to say about #Akea after trying it, as it includes several, fermented ancient grains.
